Thanks to the many of you who dropped by the MERC/DES booth at PDAC and attended another hugely successful Alumi Reception. The reception was filled with alumni and friends who came to catch up with each other and to hear about recent initiatives in the Department, MERC, and LU by DES Chairman Dan Kontak, MERC Director Harold Gibson, and LU President Dominic Giroux.
June 2011: School of Mines Establishment
The University has approved the establishment of a School of Mines, of which the Department of Earth Sciences and Mineral Exploration Centre will be a critical part. The School will highlight LU's teaching and research in all areas of the Mining Cycle, from greenfields exploration, aboriginal consultation, and environmental evaluation through mine engineering and automation, mineral beneficiation, and occupational health & safety, to mine closure, environmental remediation, and environmental monitoring.
McDonald's New Minerals
Our mineralogist, Dr. Andy McDonald, continues to discover new minerals, two in 2009, four in 2010, and one so far in 2011, bringing the total of new minerals that he has discovered or co-discovered to 19. Read more to see a list of the discovered minerals. Well done Andy!

The Department of Earth Sciences and Mineral Exploration Centre are located in the Willet Green Miller Mineral and Mining Research Centre, which was designed from the ground up as a geoscience building. Department faculty, research scientists, and students are working on fundamental geological problems all over the world.
